  61. Digital League Baseball is a computerized baseball simulation game. The 
  62. concept behind DLB is simple. Players can play their favorite Major
  63. League teams aganist each other while keeping all past statistics and 
  64. the teams win-loss records. DLB is in the same spirit as the older board 
  65. simulation games. DLB utilizes players statistics and probabilities 
  66. and uses a random number generator to choose the outcome from these 
  67. probabilities. For example, a batter with a .300 batting average initally
  68. has a 30% chance of getting on base safely. This 30% is split amoung
  69. his individual stats of singles,doubles,triples,strikeouts... Then these
  70. numbers are modified depending upon the current pitcher's ERA and
  71. his current strength as the game progresses.

  73. As a manager of DLB you make all the strategic decisions: when to steal,
  74. hit & run, pinch hit, bunt, substitute players, tag up on fly balls, 
  75. intentionally walk batters... All you have to do is register your personal
  76. copy of DLB ( see REGISTRATION INFO ).

  129. DOCUMENTATION

  131. DLB is probably one of the easist software programs you will ever use.
  132. Every screen is accompanied by short documentation describing your
  133. options.
  134.  
  135. To begin a session of DIGITAL LEAGUE BASEBALL first type 'dlb' followed
  136. by a carriage RETURN at your terminal. 
  137.  
  138. A registered copy of DLB allows you to play all four Major League 
  139. Divisions for interesting competition. 1. National League West  
  140. 2. American League West 3. National League East and 4. American 
  141. League East. You must choose the league you wish to play by typing 
  142. the number next to the league name. This shareware diskette contains 
  143. the NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST.
  144.  
  145. After each game is played DLB will ask you if you want to save the game
  146. to disk. If you type 'y' then the results of the game you just played
  147. will appear on the standings for that division, thus allowing you to
  148. distinguish the best teams from the worst.
  149.  
  150. After choosing the division you wish to play you will see that division
  151. standings page. You should now pick the teams you wish to play aganist
  152. each other by typing the number to the left of the team name. First 
  153. pick the home team, then the visiting team. Now you are ready to choose
  154. the batting order for both teams.

  156. The roster for the home team is displayed: players names,positions, and 
  157. other vital stats are organized by infield, outfield, and pitching staff.
  158. Choose the order by typing the number at the left of the players name 
  159. followed by a carriage return. We do this once for each team. If you make
  160. a mistake just retype the number of the last player chosen. After you
  161. choose the lineup DLB will display your starters and subs with the question
  162. "is this correct?". If you type 'n' you will start from scratch and 
  163. choose the lineup again.

  165. The game is now ready to begin! The graphic images are drawn on the screen
  166. as well as all the information you need to play. The upper left portion
  167. of the screen is the playing field where all the action will take place.
  168. The right hand side of the screen is reserved for the team that is
  169. up to bat and the bottom right is reserved for defensive stats.

  187. To use DLB is simple. The commands use the arrow keys ( located at RT.
  188. of IBMPC keyboard) and the RETURN key. Hit the arrow keys to choose
  189. the command you want, then hit the return key to execute that command.

  191.   The COMMANDS are :
  192.       a.) PIT - throw the pitch.
  193.       b.) OPTS - look at the options page. This is where you decide to
  194.           steal, hit & run, substitute,view player stats,warm up bullpen...
  195.       ( see OPTIONS ).
  196.       c.) RPLY - instant replay. Sometimes the events in DLB happen so
  197.           quickly you want to see them again.
  198.       d.) quit - end this playing session.

  201. The BATTER STATS show a.) the current batter  b.) his position in the
  202. batting order c.) how he has done so far during this game d.) batting
  203. average e.) batting average versus a right handed pitcher f.) batting
  204. average versus a left handed pitcher.

  206. The PITCHER STATS show a.) pitchers name b.) his earned run average
  207. c.) number of strikeouts so far during this game (k) d.) number of
  208. walks e.) number of hits given up f.) a strength rating - the higher
  209. this number gets means your pitcher is getting weaker. You should 
  210. experiment with this number to see how it affects the game. Your skill
  211. as a DLB manager partially rests with your ability to detect a weak
  212. pitcher.

  214. The OFFENSIVE STATS show the current baserunners and their stolen base
  215. statistics. Use these to decide weather or not to steal, hit & run...
  216. These stats are used on a "sliding" scale ie: a runner whose stolen base
  217. stats are 1-2 ( one stolen base from two attempts ) will have a lower
  218. probability of stealing than someone who is 15-30. The assumption is that
  219. the faster runners usually attempt to steal more times than the slower
  220. ones.

  223. OPTIONS
  224.  
  225. As a manager, DLB provides you with the following options:

  231. -------
  232.   1. STEAL2 - Choose this option when you want to steal second base.
  233.               Steals are determined on a sliding scale based upon the
  234.               runners stolen base percentages ( for more information
  235.               write!)
  236.   2. STEAL3 - Steal third base. Keep in mind that stealing third is
  237.               more difficult to do than stealing second because the
  238.           catcher has less distance to throw.
  239.   3. HIT&RUN- Swing away while the runners attempt to steal.
  240.   4. BUNT   - Bunt for base hit.
  241.   6. PINCH HIT - Change batters. If you want to pinch hit for the pitcher
  242.                  there must be an active pitcher in the bullpen so you must
  243.          think ahead. Currently DLB will allow you to activate a
  244.          pitcher only from the defensive team.
  245.   7. VIEW STATS - Look at offensive players statistics. DLB will show the
  246.                   stats in a "baseball card" format. Use the space bar
  247.           to see the entire team.

  251.   A.  WALK BATTER - Intentionally walk the current batter.
  252.   B.  BULLPEN     - Either activate a pitcher or substitute
  253.                     pitchers. Future implementations of DLB
  254.             will allow you to substitute pitchers only
  255.             after a certain time has elapsed for active
  256.             pitchers. Keep in mind that you cannot substitute
  257.             a pitcher unless he is first activated.
  258.   C.  VIEW STATS  - Look at the defensive teams statistics.

  262.   X.  SOUND ON/OFF - If the sound is "on" after each half inning
  263.                      DLB will play the "rally" song. This command
  264.              is a toggle switch, hit it twice and it returns
  265.              to its original position.
